San Francisco and Modelling Cable Cars

We've been reading these books about cable cars and San Francisco, so I thought it would be great to have a go making a model cable car to learn about how they work.

A cardboard box, a long piece of wool and some little people.  I taped the wool to the underside of our cable car and we positioned ourselves at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Chick said it needed a front light and found a circular sequin and stuck it on with some glue.

We talked about the grip lever and the cable and how the cable car grips the cable under the road and is towed up the hill.  On the way down we talked about how the brakes might work and we demonstrated what would happen if the cable car couldn't stop - causing much amusement as the poor little people all fell out at the bottom!

So we added a roof to help them stay in!

Fun, interactive, playful learning, a bit of engineering and I enjoyed it too!  We also looked up San Francisco on google maps and had a trip down one of the hills that has a cable car on it.
